Sense of enlightenment

March 08

Dear All,

For an Internet company, our valuable thoughts seem to have appeared on an awful lot of magazines recently.

Dr. Dave set the readers of New Media Age straight about the problems of delivering email successfully through spam-killers; .NET magazine printed my article on usability this month; Ben told readers of Insurance International magazine how worried they should be about security; also our cutting insights into successful Intranets filled several pages of Knowledge Management magazine.

Internet World Not content with delivering our opinions through magazines, we are taking them with us to this year's Internet World exhibition at Earls Court, London in April/May. We'll be on a stand W591 near the branding workshop, so if you're going along then do drop in and see us.

More Sense news below, so until next time,

So what have we been babbling about this week?

We're a company of music lovers, and as such we'd have loved to get our hands on this incredible ebay listing (Not just the undisputed largest collection of recorded music in the world, but also the most viewed and watched listing ebay has ever had!)

Worlds Greatest Music Collection

We did consider a kitty, but a company record collection of this magnitude might have to wait 'til next time :\

If you've been thinking of buying new chairs for the office then look no further; the Hawaii Chair is the answer to all your chairing needs!

Corporate Intranets

Corporate intranets have a tendency to become poorly-maintained graveyards for outdated information that are seldom visited by the users who expect to get so much value from them. We can offer advice on the step that organisations need to ensure that their intranet remains both useful and usable throughout it's lifespan:

Examples of features your intranet-users may find useful:

A way to find internal phone numbers
A way to book and manage holidays
Expenses claim management
Sickness / absence management
Timesheet management
Appraisal preparation
Lunch specials in the canteen

To discover what your users require from your intranet, do some simple user research; such as asking "What stupid things do people around you consistently get wrong?" You can discover the problems your users are experiencing with everyday tasks and provide them with something that makes the problem go away. Everyone will love both you and your intranet - for a while at least!
